Sigi shoved a handful of potato chips into her mouth as she skidded through the gym doors just in time for training to start. Her shower had been particularly comfortable, and she had lost track of what little time she had. Her hair was still a little wet, and the buttons on her shirt were offset by one, but she wasn't late this time. The trainer gave her an exasperated look as she stepped into line with the other volunteers, and Sigi returned it with an apologetic grin. Hilda was a retired Bureau veteran -- tough as nails with a personality to match -- and Sigi doubted she would get off easy just because she was technically on time. Her 'lack of discipline' was a regular subject during their training sessions. "Alright recruits! Now that we're all here..." She glowered at Sigi, "Lets get started. Since we've finally arrived at our destination, it's about time we work on some live fire exercises. We'll be doing duels today, so you can get the feel for each other. Sigi, you're up first. Don't want you falling asleep in the back again.""Aw man..." Sigi groaned, but she did as she was told and stepped forward into the fighting arena. "Now then, who else..." Hilda scratched her chin, looking over the other volunteers for a good match for Sigi.

Post by Hiroko Agueda on Sept 27, 2022 23:46:21 GMT
Standing alone, a thin sheen of slightly unnatural synthetic sweat coating and cooling her skin, Hiroko's eyes barely blinked as her bandaged fists demolished another training dummy, to the sighs of the supervising staff. Her sweat-shirt clung tightly to her lithe frame, muscles framed like cords along her long legs and taut arms. She was bare-foot, as an earlier kick-boxing session had not only destroyed the kick-bag, but ruined her gym-shoes too. For some, the spectacle of this impossibly athletic woman ruining gym equipment with precise and measured blows was both awe-inspiring and maybe even a little arousing. For those supervising her, however, her presence in the Gym was a considerable irritation. "For the sake of our equipment, Volunteer Agueda, please can you go a little easier?""I am already operating at sub-optimal levels for combat. Any lighter would entirely defeat the purpose of training to begin with."The staff-member shook their head helplessly at Hiroko's emotionless tone. Even Unison Devices had more personality than this woman seemed to, at times. "What about sparring? At least then there's a chance your blows won't connect."Hiroko looked around behind her, surveying the people in the Gym, and then back at the staff member. "There is no one presently in this room that I could not hit."
She paused. "Additionally, I believe that most of those present know this, and would decline to spar with me, out of fear."The Staff-member regarded the poor, battered remnants of the training dummy at her feet, and sighed. "You might be right about that one."The Staffer was relieved to see however, that Hilda was beginning some group training with some of the other new recruits. If nothing else, he could safely hand over "Volunteer Agueda" to a superior officer. It was Hilda's problem now. "Hey, Agueda, why don't you try training with those recruits over there? Maybe show them a thing or two, eh?"The Staff-member winced at his own poor choice of words. "Actually, maybe you shouldn't-""That is an excellent idea! Come over here, Volunteer! We need one more to make up the numbers!" Hilda interceded, calling Hiroko over before the staff-member could stop her. He sighed and shrugged. Well, it was their funeral... ============== Somehow, "Volunteer Agueda" found herself standing opposite a girl a good seven inches shorter than her. She seemed to be about half Hiroko's age as well. Nonetheless, she regarded her perspective duel opponent with the same precise gaze she assessed every target, scanning their material, chemical and atomic compositions to calibrate her responses. "I have been instructed to fight as minimally as possible to avoid undue harm. However, I must warn you. I am incapable of "going easy" on you." She said in her usual toneless way. "You may wish to raise your guard."Once Hilda gave the signal, Hiroko launched herself at dizzying speed, a simple, straightforward punch aimed squarely at poor Sigi's head. It was almost embarassingly crude and sloppy by Hiroko's usual standards, but it was as much to take the measure of her opponent as it was to end the duel as quickly and efficiently as possible with the minimal amount of harm to Volunteer Winter. Post by Sigi Winter on Sept 28, 2022 1:30:25 GMT
Sigi was apparently having one of those days. Hilda had apparently decided it was appropriate for her to fight some kind of murder robot for training today. She swallowed hard, and activated her device as the strange girl stepped into the ring. Hiroko towered over her-- her reach would be a problem to deal with. She didn't want to get hit with one of those punches either, so throwing the fight to get out of it was out. Maybe if she actually managed to beat this girl Hilda would finally give her a break. Maybe she could even go home for the day... Sigi was starting to get motivated. She took her stance, bouncing on the balls of her feet to stay mobile. She'd need to get in the first strike if she wanted to end this quickly. Hiroko warned her to keep up her guard, but as soon as her opponent moved to attack, Sigi closed the distance with lightning speed. She weaved past Hiroko's guard, chambering a cartridge as she moved. "CHARGE LOAD!"
"Roger~"
Sigi dipped low, then used her momentum to spring upward in a devastating uppercut. If she could connect with the girl's chin, she could end this in a single strike! If Hiroko was surprised by Sigi's sudden reckless charge and immediate acceleration from physical to mana-boosted combat, her passive face certainly didn't show it. The short-statured trainee who had seemed like such a non-threat had nonetheless managed to do something nobody else yet on the ship had been able to- they had managed to get the first strike off on Hiroko. Unfortunately for the younger techmage, Taking the iniatitive, even a magically boosted one, had not yielded the desired results. With a seemingly effortless shifting of her stance, the synthetic humanoid had simply moved out of the way, her hair ruffled only slightly by the breeze. Taking a single half-step back, Hiroko's green eyes seemed to move rythmically back and forth, a subtle indicator that she was engaging her internal tactical HUD system. She watched again at 1/1000th normal time as Sigi's attack breezed past her. She took note of the angle of attack and the level of power involved, and re-assessed the threat capacity of her sparring partner. "Be advised. Using magic in this context allows me to reciprocate." She stated formally. No sooner were the words spoken than she had activated her own Device, and with blistering speed and uncanny aim, hurled a small bolt of magical energy at her opponent. All of this had taken mere seconds to unfold. Most of the other trainees had not even dared to launch their first strike at each other yet. Yet already the space around Hiroko and Sigi was clearing as their fight-speed wowed onlookers. "I put fifteen creds on the robot girl." whispered one staff-member to another. COMBAT TRACKER

Sigi clicked her tongue as her fist only cut through air. So much for winning this quick. Hiroko deftly turned away from her attack, then Sigi felt cold steel against her head. On instinct, she moved her head out of the way just in time for the bolt of energy to sail past her, taking a few strands of hair with it. She found herself staring down the long barrel of a high powered rifle, ears ringing. Wasn't this girl just punching dummies? How the heck does that help you become a better marksman? More importantly... "WHO THE HECK USES A SNIPER AT THIS RANGE?!"
Dodging the shot had taken her off balance, but rather than fighting to regain her footing, she let her momentum carry her and pivoted hard on one foot. "ONE MORE, GUNGNIR!"
"Loading~"
She planted her second foot, shattering one of the arena tiles, and chambered another cartridge. This time she aimed for the gut, hoping to stagger her opponent and open her up to more attacks. Would that even work on a robot? Either way, hitting her hard enough was bound to do damage eventually. She just had to make sure to avoid that rifle if she wanted to keep her head. Post by Hiroko Agueda on Sept 30, 2022 0:17:25 GMT
Hiroko remained unfazed by Sigi's sudden burst of furious energy, simply reacting and avoiding her attempts to land a blow. The sudden mana-created appearance of her Device, a long-barrelled sniper rifle that also function as her staff, would have been awkward and a detriment to most in such a melee. Hiroko was more than used to fighting in awkward situations with unwieldy weapons however, and her feet operated with eerie dancer-like grace, side-stepping another furious blow, this girl igniting her Belkan cartridges with furious abandon. Normally Agueda would have supposed that this sort of wild escalation would merit intervention by the supervising authorities, or even an escalation on her part towards lethal force, but she suspected that Hilda was simply trying to gain the measure of this new girl by letting her go all out against a proven veteran like Hiroko. She would be happy to abide by this inferred wish. Saving the power in her HUD for now, she switched to discharging microscopic mana-drones from her pores- she was a hybrid of organic and machine after-all- in order to blanket the area and improve her accuracy that way. At the same time, swinging her rifle back around, she again fired a nearly point-blank blast of charged mana at the nimble recruit. The concussive force of the muzzle-brake exhaust would be enough to knock most people off of their feet. But Hiroko was already anticipating that this attack too, might fail. She raised her rifle after firing, empowering it like a barrier jacket, allowing it to serve as a cross-piece to Guard her and ward off another incoming onslaught from the pint-sized brawler. What had begun merely as a simple physical sparring exercise was rapidly escalating into a full blown duel between two Techmages deploying all their assets to full capacity. This did not bother Agueda in the slightest, who was confident that if her actions were disapproved of, they simply need order her to stop. Most seemed content to serve as bystanders to this furious melee. And so she kept her focus on the opponent before her, ready to deploy yet more of her formidable skills as and when needed. Post by Sigi Winter on Sept 30, 2022 19:42:00 GMT
Sigi grunted in frustration as Hiroko dodged another punch. The way she moved was eerie-- more like a machine than a person. She knew better than to get too caught up in her own head, though. Her master had taught her that getting mad was the quickest way to lose a fight. She'd just end up being reckless and dropping her own guard if she let herself be provoked. If attacking head on wasn't working, she'd just have to adapt. Sigi was learning her opponent's attack patterns, and she felt like she could manage to avoid her attacks for a little while longer. Sigi knew another point-blank gunshot would be coming her way now that she had missed. It had caught her off guard last time, but this time she felt like she could see the attack coming in slow motion. She was confident she had the advantage as far as speed, at least. She racked another cartridge, this time focusing the mana boost into her legs rather than her fists, and gripped the floor as hard as she could with her feet. Hiroko's sniper blast tore through an Sigi's after image as she circled behind the robot woman in the blink of an eye, sending more floor tiles scattering as she pushed off. She was still operating mostly on instinct, but surely Hiroko had blind spots just like anyone else. And even if she didn't, all Sigi had to do was move faster than she could react. With the extra momentum from her burst of speed, Sigi's kick shot out like a whip, aimed straight for the small of Hiroko's back. The padded mats underneath Hiroko's bare feet seemed to tear and crease as she absorbed the fearsome blow dealt by Sigi. Her Rifle, held aloft like a cross-piece, seemed to deflect some of the furious energy, but not enough. Hiroko could detect significant wear and tear to her muscles and serious abrasion across her upper epidermal layers. She was in short, injured. "An impressive blow." She stated, a sincere compliment given how Sigi's actions were forcing Hiroko to constantly re-assess and re-evaluate her opponent. But this fight was far from over. As soon as Sigi's blow slackened she immediately disengaged, backflipping like a gymnast several paces, her rifle kept close to her chest, before she redeployed it and fired another shot off. Her mana-drones continued to feed near-real time telemetry of Sigi to her, helping her adjust her aim. The rest of the training had now more or less been halted. Hilda seemed to be arguing with one of the staff-members, as some of them were now taking bets in earnest. Somehow their little spart was evolving into everybody else's entertainment. A rare event noteworthy of attention. Well, if it's a show they want....The unbidden thought came to mind, flotsam of the woman she once was surfacing. It happened from time to time, but it seemed to be happening more frequently these days. Something she would have to take note of and be wary of. The split in her mind divided her attention for just a nanosecond, however. More alarming than being hit by the newcomer. Sigi had managed to -distract- her. Hiroko resolved to end this quickly, when she got the chance. She could feel her gauge charging already. COMBAT TRACKER

At first Sigi thought her kick had sent Hiroko flying. "OH NO! I'm sorry!" She squealed and reached out to catch her. Then the rifle turned to point at her. She should have noticed that the kick didn't feel like it had fully impacted. She must have moved at the last second. Now she had the range advantage, and with this empty ring there wasn't anything Sigi could hide behind. She gritted her teeth. She REALLY didn't want to get hit by that thing. It looked like it hurt. A lot. She needed to get in close again, but the shot would be coming any second now. Without any way to dodge out of the way, there was only one thing she could do. "GUNGNIR! WE'RE GOING THROUGH IT!"
"Activating thrusters~"
The vents on the back of her armor opened up, and a quick blast of mana shoved her forward, straight into Hiroko's shot. "Redirecting barrier~"
Gungnir diverted all of its defensive spells into Sigi's right fist, causing it to glow with a loft blue light. "HRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!"
With a mighty roar, Sigi backhanded the blast just before it hit her, sending it spiraling into the wall of the gym. She hoped she didn't get in trouble for that later... "Release and reload~"
Her barrier snapped back to its normal form, and Sigi wound up a punch while another cartridge chambered. She knew better than to go for a headshot again. She'd go for another body blow and keep hammering on her until she couldn't stand anymore. [256] COMBAT TRACKERSUMMARY: Sigi uses a Belkan Cartridge. 2/6 remain. Sigi casts Strike.

Hiroko belatedly began to realise that this raging dynamo, far from merely being an impressive amateur, was actually beginning to wear on her. However, it was also obvious to the experienced former TacMage that Sigi was burning through her cartridges to deliver this kind of punishment. All Agueda had to do was weather this storm, and deliver her Gauge Shot once it was ready, and then beat some sense into this overly energetic show-off. Brushing aside such thoughts, Hiroko barely flinched as she felt the concussive force of Sigi's hammer-blows buckling her Barrier Field. Raising her battered Sniper Device once again, she used it to create distance between her and Sigi once more, aiming the rifle at an odd angle to try to ricochet the shot off the training room floor and up under Sigi's guard. It was a bit of a trick shot, but success wasn't necessary- It simply kept her opponent's attention divided while Hiroko began to feel the mana flow into her. Activating her Tactical HUD once again, she fed more and more data into it, confident now that despite the beating she had taken, the long game was hers. "Impressive force, but lacking in strategy." Hiroko commented, breaking her usual stoic silence. It was something of an assumption and a gamble, of course- if Sigi really did have more reserves in her than what her cartridges could provide, then this might degenerate into a slug-fest. But, she suspected, the trainers would intervene if the fight degenerated to that level. For now, their thunderous back and forths were likely being used as an implicit teaching aid, as well as impromptu entertainment fodder and a source of revenue for canny gamblers. COMBAT TRACKER

Sigi's cheeks puffed out at Hiroko's comment about her 'strategy.' She was trying really hard! She knew Hiroko was just trying to get under her skin and make her make a mistake, but it was still frustrating. Worse, she was running low on cartridges. It would be difficult to punch through Hiroko's barrier without them, but she was confident in her stamina and speed. Worst case scenario was they'd end up in a stalemate with neither able to land a finishing blow. Hiroko raised her rifle at Sigi, but... something was wrong this time. Sigi wasn't a marksman by any means, but even she could tell the rifle wasn't pointed at her. Was this just another strategy to throw her off or-- The shot rang out before Sigi could finish her thought. The blast went wide of Sigi, not even close to hitting her. Too late Sigi realized what Hiroko had done. Rather than get absorbed into the ground, the shot ricocheted off the smooth ground. If it kept following the trajectory it was on it would bounce off the wall, the ceiling and then... straight into where Sigi was about to be. She tried to skid to a halt to take herself out of its path, but she was already moving too quickly. The bolt bounced off the wall and then... impacted one of the light fixtures, shattering it and sending sparks raining down on some of the rookie volunteers. They scattered, more scared than hurt, and Sigi just stood there for a moment, surprised at how lucky she was. She felt like she should apologize for some reason. But this wasn't the time. She shook off her shock and charged back in at Hiroko. This time, she channeled some mana into her senses, expanding her already strong instincts to look for an opening in Hiroko's guard. She racked another cartridge, and her fist struck out like a snake. [320] SUMMARY: Sigi uses a Belkan Cartridge. 1/6 remain. Sigi casts Area Search -- +10 accuracy, -5 mana Sigi casts Strike.

The shower of sparks from the damaged light fixture barely fazed the veteran sniper. She had to admit however, Sigi's extraordinary agility and grace in avoiding her shots- admittedly, Hiroko was somewhat handicapped by the range, but still- was something impressive. However, her gauge was now sufficiently charged for her to deploy her signature move. Her plan now was simple- keep firing the Curse Shot until Sigi was sufficiently drained that Hiroko could walk over and push her over, and thus claim victory. It was a simple plan, albeit one rooted in excessive magical force. She could see that the trainers were looking uneasy about the damage now being dealt to their arena, but no one as yet wanted to get between the two of them while this furious melee was going on. Hiroko didn't even try to Guard or Evade this time. She simply took Sigi's powered strike to the jaw, feeling her servo-motors crunch and judder, her synthetic skin splitting and adamantium-reinforced-teeth buckling. It would be extremely painful, but she had copper-wire receptors to reroute unnecessary pain signals away from her brain. As blood ran through her teeth and her considerably dented jaw, her head and neck tilted at an agonising angle, she simply closed her swollen eye and willed all her Gauge Power into her rifle. By rights the blow should have knocked her into the wall, but somehow she was still standing. It really wasn't good to go this hard in training, but Agueda was programmed to succeed at all costs. She could heal/get fixed faster than regular people anyway. Usually. For the first time, there was a twitch of a smile on her damaged face. "Check." She managed to croak through broken teeth. She fired. COMBAT TRACKER

Sigi's stomach turned as her fist sank into Hiroko's face. She didn't put up a shield?! But Sigi was punching as hard as she could. Surely she saw it coming. This was just a training exercise. She didn't want to actually hurt her. "Oh no! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to hit you that hard!"She pulled her fist back as if to try to undo the punch, only revealing Hiroko's ruined face to herself. She cringed again. She was no stranger to combat, but had never had a fight go this far with another person. And yet... Was Hiroko smiling? The thought barely had time to cross her mind before her opponent's gun was leveled at her again, this time with no room to dodge. She barely even managed to put up a shield before the blast slammed into her, sending her flying. She found her bearings quickly, turning her fall into a flip and landing in a defensive stance, but there was something different about that attack. A cold chill shuddered through her body, and for a moment she could feel her strength leave her. She managed to power through it, but it still left her shaken. Was it poison? Some kind of special energy? Were all her attacks like that or just the one? There was no way to know. She'd just have to keep avoiding being hit. She knew she couldn't afford to get distracted fighting Hiroko, but Sigi couldn't help staring at the wound she had just inflicted. She'd go for body blows from here on out, so that she'd be sure not to kill her. Sigi swallowed hard, then racked her last cartridge and charged in. It was becoming clear that despite giving her all, Sigi Winter had clearly bested her. True, this type of sparring environment was not conducive to a full display of her talents, but she could no longer deny that by any reasonable approximation of the parameters of a training scenario, Sigi Winter had clearly, repeatedly proven herself superior. This was not troubling, but simply new information that had to be catalogued and absorbed. Indeed, it could be argued that by continuing to fight in her usual manner, so unsuited for this kind of close quarters combat, spar or no spar, Hiroko had already fatally compromised herself, and a total re-evaluation of her neural net would be necessary. Of course, there was the physical damage to be considered. Sigi barely had a scratch on her, for all that the Curse Shot had finally landed, albeit having to be made at as point blank a range as possible. The effects of the Curse seemed to have dissipated, however. It was clear that Hiroko's usual strategy was wildly inadequate for this kind of combat scenario, and as such it had been an extremely successful spar. Training merely to maintain muscle memory and damage ship property was futile for a cyborg like her, after all. Still, before she conceded defeat, she resolved to give it her all with one last shot. Extending a fragile barrier jacket around her Rifle Device, she was able to partially absorb yet another one of Sigi's blows in a guarding action, though her systems were really straining now. Her footing was broken, synthetic sweat covered every inch of her surface, and some of her blood-coolant was even leaking from some cuts. "You hit hard. You make an excellent sparrer." She said, offering a sincere compliment. "But a true soldier requires a killing instinct."
She wobbled somewhat, unsteady and head ringing with internal error alarms- and because her eardrums had burst from the concussive force of Sigi's repeated blows. She steadied herself on the barrel of her rifle, staring down Sigi. There was one more lesson still to teach this brash brawler, she felt. "You can dodge, and you can hit hard. But can you take punishment, and keep going untill there is nothing left?"Hiroko asked the question sincerely. Whatever answer was given would help inform a profile she was generating for Sigi. "Finish me and finish this duel."
She stood, guard ready, and waited. COMBAT TRACKER

Sigi gasped for breath, glad that there was a small break in the fighting. Hiroko was on her last leg, but Sigi was out of cartridges. She'd have trouble getting through Hiroko's field spell now. Maybe that was a good thing, considering what had happened to Hiroko's face already..
As if she could read Sigi's mind, Hiroko challenged her to finish the fight. Even bloody and battered, Hiroko wanted to see their battle to the end. It didn't make any sense. In a combat situation, she should be trying to figure out how to escape, not throwing her life away.
Sigi clenched her fists hard, but did not dash in to strike as she had so far. If this had been a real fight against a monster of some sort, she would have delivered the finishing blow already. But she was fighting a real person this time, and it was just a training exercise. Did they really have to beat each other into a pulp? Couldn't this be enough? She knew what Hiroko was saying was true, but even so...
"YOU SHOULDN'T SAY THINGS LIKE THAT!" She blurted out, tears beginning to well up in her eyes. "We don't need to kill everyone we fight against, do we? If you can't fight anymore, can't we just talk. Can't we just be friends? You're a person!" Sigi was fighting to hold back the tears, but each time she sniffled a few more leaked out. "You're worth more than that, Hiroko. I don't want to hurt my friends..."
She was probably wide open at this point, but that didn't matter to her. Even if she was technically right, Hiroko was wrong. As a knight, she could not accept the cold calculus that Hiroko determined to make a good soldier, and she definitely wasn't going to hurt an opponent that couldn't fight back.
