Lorie was quick to steady herself once Sigi let her down, despite the madness that seemed to be completely surrounding them. It all started with condiments. One after the other... And then, as they drew closer to the familiar, other food items started appearing, albeit comically oversized. Sliced tomatoes, lettuce, onions, pickles, bacon... topped off with a giant wall of sliced bread. Still, the two Knights advanced as they closed in on the source of all this ruckus, the elusive so-called familiar, which had just ducked behind a sliding door at the end of the hall. Lorie kicked away an obstructive olive skewered on a toothpick, the thing the size of a soccer ball. "What sort of Cretarianism is this?"That wasn't a popular term in the modern Dimensional Sea. Of course not. It had been buried underneath centuries of Belkan self-focus. Only those who had stayed deeply true to their roots would even be taught of early Belka's first great hurdle to ascension, Cretaria. The biggest of the civilisations that orbited around the middle layer of Al-Hazard's hegemony... With the Magnificent World's disappearance, Cretaria sought to fill the power vacuum with itself and thus stood in the way of Belka's path to ascension. Suffice it to say, the resulting conflict would last for decades before the tables finally turned, and Cretaria was sent to the dustbin of history. But its impact on the Great Houses still remained, and 'Cretarianism' became an ancient slur named after Belka's first true nemesis. Lorie looked around at the hallway as they closed in on the door. Everything was so... It was hard to describe. It was almost as if their surroundings had transformed into a mockery of a deli platter. Close approximations of food, but just incorrect enough that it looked wrong, in an inexplicable way. "Meine Herrin, we have arrived," Hofud chimed. "Come, Sigi. This game ends here." Not even bothering to try and see if the access keypad had resisted password corruption, Lorie channeled mana into her right leg, and kicked the door down. It flew off its hinges, landing in the centre of the room. She led her vassal inside. The scene was somehow even more grotesque, with the hideous subliminally offputting food almost taking on a pseudo-crayon quality. As if the reason everything looked so wrong was that it had been drawn by a child who was getting pretty good at drawing things, but wasn't quite at the stage that things started to look realistic enough. At the centre of it sat the lab personnel, dozens of them, swaying to and fro, enraptured by some invisible tune... That otherworldly warble sounded off again, and Lorie looked up to see... something... standing on top of a stack of salami slices. "Is that... a Sandwich?" There was no question. The surreal monster was the familiar they came to recapture. It was best described as a sandwich-man. But not in the entertaining way one might picture in a children's cartoon. No, just like the environment it had birthed, it looked... wrong. It wasn't a happy little sandwich-man, so much as it was a hideous sandwich- thing. Curiously, as if it were trying to introduce itself, a series of whimsical-looking characters appeared beneath the Sandwich-thing. Like a video game announcing a boss' name. Not that it was helping. She had no idea what language it was in, or even if it was a language at all. "Record that text, Hofud. The Bureau will probably want to decode it at some point."Something inside her was telling her to just kill it, and save them the trouble of having to recapture it. But even if that would make it so much easier, there was no doubt the Volunteer Commission would have her head if they did that. She drew her blade and twisted it to an angle to ensure the broad flat side would hit with each stroke. Not the most efficient way to knock out a target, but when all you had was a sword... "Sigi, let us go. Don't break it too badly."[1/1] Sigi Winter

“Huh… so that’s why everything was covered in… and all the… it was a giant… sandwich…” Sigi was so stupefied by the absurdity of the situation that it almost made sense. She didn’t even blink when Lorie described it using a word she’d only ever heard her grandma use. If she was trying to say this thing was super gross, then she was correct. Sigi had eaten a lot of things she probably shouldn’t as her allowance money slowly dwindled, but the way the whole thing wriggled when it moved, the oozing cheese and that weird warbling noise it kept making, she really couldn’t see it as real food.
More concerning was the group of lab workers huddled in the middle of the room. She guessed that it must be hypnotizing them somehow, but whatever it was didn’t seem to be affecting her and Lorie. Either way, they’d need to be on guard for mental attacks just in case. Gungnir, deactivate yourself if I start to attack Lady Hechingen. Lady Hechingen, I recommend we follow standard protocols for two versus one combat until we can work out its attack patterns.” She wasn’t sure how intelligent this thing was, but it didn’t seem to be a good idea to say their plans out loud. Of course, Lorie would know from her knight training that they should try to approach from opposite sides to throw the creature off guard and give each other openings to strike.

Sigi took the lead, blasting past the familiar and circling around behind it. Gungnir analyzed the creature for weak points. Was it the sandwich? The body? Surely not those creepy legs. It didn’t have arms, so its defenses were wide open, but it had also managed to defeat all the guards in the lab without so much as a scratch. There was also the kissing to worry about. How would this thing even kiss them without a mouth? Did it have a hidden head somewhere? She decided the safe bet was to just go for the center of mass and pay attention to its movements. Living creatures tend to move to defend their weak points, even if they aren’t thinking about it, so perhaps the familiar would do the same.
Sigi already had two cartridges loaded from before, so she dumped the mana into her device. She planted her feet, and gathered all of her energy into her fists. It was difficult to grip the ground with all this sauce everywhere, so she focused and let out a pulse of energy, blasting away the goo immediately around her. She was supposed to capture the familiar, not kill it, but that would be difficult without knowing how strong it was. She threw her whole body into the punch, just in case, figuring she wouldn’t be able to destroy it with a single blow.

"An astute suggestion, Sigi," Lorie nodded in approval. "Begin." From Sigi's movement immediately after, Lorie could tell she was intending to take it from behind. After a feint that looked like she was going to take it head-on. But such was the cleverness of Belkan tactics. It was gracious as a vassal could be, engaging the foe in a skirmish so that the suzerain could have the honour of tackling it face to face. Of course, this was no ordinary battle, and the mission was to capture it alive. Based on its actions, this seemed to be more of an intelligent beast than a true foe. In which case this was more of a hunt, really... And for hunts, entrapment was needed. Lorie channelled mana through her blade and chanted a quick incantation. Golden magic circles manifested at various angles that would hopefully be a blind spot for the creature. She was only guessing, as Hofud's analysis for vulnerabilities was not yet complete. When all were in place, the disgraced heiress closed her fist and shouted the final line, "Fange!" Chains of golden light erupted from the circles, clearly intent on ensnaring the sandwich familiar. It wasn't a traditional binding spell in the normal sense of the word. Even if it did catch its target, it could still thrash about within the restraints, rather than being left completely open. But it didn't really matter. At the end of the day the photonic constructs catching the target was a nice, optional bonus. It wouldn't need restraints once they knocked it out cold. Like cold cuts... Lorie cringed at the horrible pun her thoughts had wrought on herself as she dashed forward, aiming to strike the sandwich-head from above with the flat of her blade. From behind the creature, Sigi was opting for a punch that looked far more likely to connect. It was quite the effective back attack. The familiar stood on top of its little lair, the central pillar of salami. This was its lair now. The sky people had caught it earlier. Put it in a cage. Played with it. But they underestimated what it could do. Or maybe they didn't know? It was a servant, first and foremost. Brought about to make sure its Mistress' guests were well fed. But it had been separated from its Mistress. And the sky people caught it. But now, it was free. Free to return to its Mistress. But something inside told it to feed these sky people first... They tried poking it before with little guns. And now, these two new sky people came with fist and sword. One gets behind it while the one in front launches chains. They seemed like meguca... but did not fight like them. Maybe they were sky meguca. And used different magic. That was the explanation. It warbled and raised its legs. Cheese oozed out from the sandwich below. Salami slices floated up from below the pillar. They caught the chains, every last one. It spun around on a tip toe, and two giant slices of toast popped out of toasters in the ceiling, dropping directly between itself and the sky meguca. The one in front easily blocked the golden sword. The one behind was not so successful, as the fist broke through. It connected with the white dress. Cheese and mustard splattered out from the exposed sandwich-body below, as though it were blood. The familiar warbled again, as if singing this time. Waves of energy not quite understood radiated from both its form, and the surrounding food items. Sweet, sour, salty... like a meaty sandwich with sweetened mayo. Seductive and threatening to ensnare all those who were nearby. It particularly focused harder on the one with the sword, as one could argue it was more dangerous than a fist. Sensing an opportunity, it darted quickly to its side, away from these new attackers who were clearly more powerful than the guards. It sang. Giant ketchup and mustard squeeze bottles emerged from the walls of the room and rained a shower of sticky, pungent, painful condiments towards the sky megucas. All while the entranced sky people continued to sway to its tune... Sigi felt her fist sink into the creature's body, and knew she had hit something vital. Her satisfaction was short-lived however, and it twisted away while summoning more condiments. Sigi had expected a counter, however, and focused her mana into a shield to protect herself from the sticky spray. If this stuff got into her hair she was going to smell like ketchup for the next month. It would have made things much easier if Lorie had managed to bind it right away, but it looked like they'd need to beat it up until it stopped moving first.
Since her strategy seemed to be working, she again darted around behind it and racked her cartridges for another powerful blow. At the very least, this thing seemed to be sturdy, so she didn't need to worry about holding back. With that in mind, she also dropped a freeze grenade from her cryo caster when she feinted. It would go off right before her strike, and even if it didn't stop its movement could serve as a distraction from the real blow. It was her first time using the device, and she had only skimmed the instruction manual, but how hard could it be to use a grenade?

Lorie grunted in annoyance as her attack was intercepted by a giant slice of toast. Frakking toast! This was supposed to be a hunt, not a cooking show! It didn't help that Sigi's punch tore through the toast and still managed to clock that sandwich familiar in the gut. Did it even have guts? Either way, while it was good for the mission, it made her look bad. She glanced briefly at the crowd of researchers, still caught in its sway. Hopefully they wouldn't remember that, if they saw it. The cameras, on the other hand, probably would. She would have to talk to the lab administration to not release the footage to anyone below a flag officer's pay-grade. The higher-ups had all the authority to see how dismally she performed, fine. She couldn't help that. But there was no way the rest of the fleet would be allowed to know! But, it was still possible to turn things around. The thing was still standing and attacking, after all! Lorie licked her lips at the strange enticing emanations coming from the bizarre deli foods scattered about, but dd not falter. These were obvious mental interference spells, and no knight worth their salt should get caught by them, dammit. The condiments were another issue, however. Even on the assumption that they would only tickle her at most, there was the very real possibility that the mustard might get her in some places. And it being magical mustard, a simple cleaning spell might not be enough to remove any such secretions. She swung her free hand in an arc covering the incoming splatter and erected a shield to catch the brunt. The same moment she saw a glint in the corner of her eye reflecting off of Sigi's cryo grenade, Lorie cast another binding spell. This time, they took the form of darts, which would attempt to pin that slippery sandwich familiar down to its vaunted pillar of salami. Perhaps she should take a lesson from Sigi and use a cartridge as well. In one swift motion, Lorie flipped her Device around, catching Hofud by the end of the blade. Steam hissed as he loaded a cartridge on her command, and she attempted to slam the beast with a Mordhau to its sandwich head. It read their moves. Not directly as one normally would. But perhaps it was because this tiny labyrinth was an extension of itself. And by these extra-sensory perceptions, it could see what they were up to more clearly. The puncher who came from behind dropping an explosive device as part of a fake movement. A distraction, if you would. But of course, to follow a distraction, there would be a real strike. And on the opposite side of it, the swashbuckler who wanted to first nail it down with a shower of darts before smacking it on the head with the pommel of her sword. It warbled and sang, and the labyrinth complied. Like clockwork, the telling ding of toasters rang out from the darkness above them, and immediately, four extra thick slices of toast shot down on either side of the familiar, shielding it from all of these feints and attacks. Cartwheeling off the pile of salami down to a suddenly growing mountain of deviled eggs, it sang again. Pointing at both of its foes, it sang in that otherworldly cadence. Strings of thick, entangling mayo shot up at its targets, with more this time focusing on the one with the fists. Then the tower of salami shook, before splintering up. Giant slices of processed meat flew towards the sky megucas, spinning like buzzsaws. One flew far and wide, missing either target entirely, and embedded itself into a far wall of the room, slicing through multiple reinforced cables to get there. Post by Sigi Winter on Feb 15, 2024 0:52:55 GMT
Something was wrong. This thing looked clumsy and unintelligent, but as she moved in for her strike, the sandwich seemed to move at just the right time. Like it knew what was coming. A solid wall of bread appeared just before her fist connected, taking all the energy out of her swing and causing it to sink harmlessly into the cold cuts at its center. Sigi gritted her teeth as it rose out of reach on the churning pile of eggs, knowing that she had messed up and underestimated this thing. If it knew that attack was coming then next would be… The deluge of mayonnaise met only air as her anchors pulled her across the room. Thankfully, the sandwich seemed to be focusing on her, and Lorie could handle the condiments easy enough with shields. It still didn’t feel right though. If it was smart enough to predict their moves, then it would know this wouldn’t be enough to take them down. On cue, the salami tower began to shudder. Sigi’s eyes darted to Lorie. Either she hadn’t noticed yet, or she simply wasn’t able to react fast enough. Either way, her first friend on this mission was about to get hurt. “LADY HECHINGEN!” Her body moved faster than she could think, and she appeared in front of Lorie, her arms crossed defensively over her vitals. The salami tower exploded, and meaty saws filled the room. Sigi managed to get her shields enough to keep them from slicing her too deep, but two got through her barrier jacket, leaving ragged red gashes in her side and shoulder. Still, she had managed to keep Lorie safe. She sighed in relief that she managed to make it in time, then continued focusing on analyzing the sandwich. Gauge charged and ready~Gungnir chimed in, and Sigi grinned. Finally, she could show Lorie what she had been working on. And she was going to get it back for trying to hurt her friend. ”Don’t worry, Lady Hechingen. I’ll do my duty and keep you safe. We’ll finish this together.”Sigi cycled another set of cartridges, and brought her hands together in front of her. This spell called for more delicate control than she was used to, but she had been practicing it every day since they had landed on this planet and she was getting pretty good at it. Her gauntlets locked together on her right hand, and she pulled it back to charge energy into the fist. Then, the gauntlet began to rotate. She had heard that the best of the Sainktkaiser’s knights, like Vita, could increase the mass of their weapon a hundred fold and crush even the strongest enemies with the sheer weight. Sigi wasn’t there yet, so she had gotten creative. Her gauntlet elongated as it rotated, spiraling into a drill shape as it spun faster and faster. The jets on her back hummed to life, as she simultaneously poured mana into them and to creating her weapon. The timing had taken a lot of work as well, since she had to finish charging the boosters at the same time the drill reached maximum size. ”House Winter secret technique: UNSTOPPABLE SPEAR”The ground shattered beneath her feet, sending condiments spraying against the wall as she shot up, drill screaming toward the familiar’s core.
